What’s in Your Toy Bag: Safety

Building Your BDSM Safety Kit

When it comes to BDSM, safety always comes first. Having a safety kit ready to go helps make sure that play stays fun, secure, and stress-free. Think of it as your toolkit for protecting both physical and emotional well-being, no matter what type of play you enjoy. Whether you’re brand new or have years of experience, putting together a kit that fits your own needs and style is an important step.

Here are some essentials to get you started:

  • A safe word or signal that everyone agrees on, so you can stop the scene immediately if needed
  • Safety scissors or a rescue blade to quickly cut through rope, tape, or restraints in an emergency
  • Disposable gloves (non-latex is best)
  • A cell phone or other way to call for help if something goes wrong
  • A first aid kit with basics like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers
  • Emergency contact numbers for local hospitals or urgent care
  • A flashlight in case you lose power or need extra light
  • A whistle to attract attention if needed
  • Bottled water to stay hydrated
  • Quick sugar like Starbursts or Skittles for low blood sugar after intense play
  • A blanket for aftercare to help with comfort and grounding
  • A notebook and pen for jotting down notes or documenting anything important after a scene

This list covers the basics, but every safety kit should reflect the type of play you enjoy. For example, fire players will want to add a fire blanket or extinguisher. If you use needles, a sharps container is a must. The goal is simple: be prepared, use common sense, and set yourself and your partner(s) up for a safe and positive experience.
